It's Flu Shot Season!

It’s time again for all residents of the City of Alexandria to get their flu shot!

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that each year, between 5% and 20% of the U.S. population gets the flu. Of this number, more than 200,000 people are hospitalized with complications from the flu, and about 36,000 people die.

The CDC recommends that anyone who wants to reduce their risk of getting influenza should get an annual flu shot. However, this year, the CDC also strongly recommends that the following high-risk groups get flu shots:

  • Children and youth ages 6 months to 19 years
  • Pregnant women
  • People ages 50 and older
  • People of any age with certain chronic medical conditions
  • People who live in nursing homes and other long-term care facilities
  • People who live with or care for those at high risk for complications from flu, including health care workers, household contacts of persons at high risk for complications from the flu, and household contacts and out-of-home caregivers of children less than 6 months old (these children are too young to be vaccinated).

We encourage you to get your flu shot from your private physician or through a local health clinic.  For a list of flu shot clinics at local grocery and retail stores in your area, please visit www.findaflushot.com

If you would like to get your flu shot at the Health Department’s King Street location, the walk-in clinic hours are as follows:

  • Mondays, 1:00 – 6:00 p.m.
  • Tuesdays, 1:00 – 4:00 p.m.
  • Wednesdays, 8:00 -11:00 a.m.

The cost of the vaccine is $30 and is billable to Medicare (for those with Part B Medicare).

Please note that this year, there will be no special flu shot clinics at the Health Department; flu shots will be provided as part of the regular immunization clinic. As a result, wait times could be longer than usual.

For more information on influenza, and how you can protect yourself and your family, please visit the CDC’s flu page at www.cdc.gov/flu.
